How Microsoft Copilot in PowerPoint works
Create a new presentation
To create a new presentation, open a blank presentation in PowerPoint. Then click the Copilot icon in the toolbar under the ‘Home’ tab. Once the Copilot window appears on the right, you can either write a prompt or select “Create a presentation about…” to create a presentation on a specific topic, or “Create a presentation from file…” to create a presentation based on an existing document.
By clicking ‘Send‘, Copilot generates a presentation based on your prompt. You can then adjust the presentation yourself or use Copilot for further tweaks.
Tips for creating a presentation based on a document:
- Use “/” to call up a file that you want the presentation to be based on.
- Use styles in Word for titles and headers so Copilot better understands the structure of your document.
- Add images to your Word document, and Copilot will include them.
- Create your Word document in the brand style template so Copilot takes that into account.
Using brand styles with Copilot
When you create a new presentation based on a blank template, Copilot generates its own brand style for the resulting presentation. If you want to use your own brand style, open an existing presentation in the brand style, or you can also open a presentation based on one of Microsoft PowerPoint’s built-in templates or themes.
Then, use the same prompt as when creating a new presentation. Be sure to make a copy of the presentation before Copilot generates a new one so you don’t lose the presentation used for the brand style. Fortunately, Copilot will give you a warning before doing this.
Adding slides or images
Once you’ve generated a presentation or want to adjust an existing one, you can use Copilot. Open the Copilot window by clicking the Copilot icon in the toolbar. Use prompts like “Add a slide about…” or “Add an image of…” followed by the content you want to add to include new slides and images in the presentation.
Summarizing presentations
Copilot in PowerPoint can quickly and easily summarize (long) presentations or extract key points and action items. Open the Copilot window from the toolbar and write a prompt like “Summarize this presentation.” Copilot will add references to the generated summary to refer to the slides where it pulled the information.
Some prompts to try:
- “Summarize this presentation.”
- “Create a list of action items.”
- “Provide a list of the key slides.”
Organizing presentations
Copilot in PowerPoint helps you organize your presentation. Copilot will divide your presentation into sections and add section headers for better structure. Open the Copilot window and write the prompt “Organize this presentation”.
Some prompts to try:
- “Restructure my slides for better flow and coherence.”
- “Add a summary slide that highlights the key points of the presentation.”
